The Museums In Essex Committee (MIEC) was established in 1985. Since then it has provided a co-ordinating focus, promoting the interests of museums within the county. The Committee is an example of co-operation between eleven district and borough authorities, Essex County Council, Southend and Thurrock unitary authorities and the independent sector. It is funded through subscriptions from members.
Our mission is to “support museums in Essex to raise standards, and make their collections accessible to everyone”
In order to achieve this we have identified 6 aims which help MIEC to prioritise how is will help museums and visitors between 2006 and 2008. They are:
Standards Raise standards in care of collections and public services for museums in Essex.
Exhibitions Develop a strong reputation for the production of touring exhibitions within the county and beyond
Marketing Raise the profile of museums in Essex and promote their collections, services, activities and events
Training Provide affordable, practical and accessible training for all
Audience Development and Accessibility Encourage and assist museums to increase and broaden the range of users
Advocacy and Developing Partnerships Work with the regional and national heritage sector to increase opportunities for Essex museums
MIEC works closely with central, regional and local government initiatives and bodies. We have 3 members of staff who are based at the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford.
