Welcome to Essex Museums
Essex has a long and rich history from the earliest tantalising clues about life in pre-historic times to the exciting technological and scientific discoveries of the twentieth century; you can explore it in the museums and galleries throughout the county.
Here you will find the details of many museums and galleries throughout Essex – from the Thames Estuary to Constable Country, Harlow to Walton-on-the-Naze. Whether you are interested in history, science, art, the environment or are just simply curious, then there is a museum in Essex for you. Look on the Search page to find your nearest museum and begin your discovery.
Are you looking for something to do during the school holidays or weekends? Would you like to learn a new skill, explore collections or get messy with a fun creative day? Then look at our Latest Events page. You will find a wide range of exhibitions, events and activities for everyone.
Are you a teacher looking for a new experience for your class? Museums and galleries offer unique opportunities to explore objects and experience history in a fresh, exciting way. Have a look at our Education page to see the wide range of education programmes on offer across the county. Museums will welcome school and group visits, but please contact the museum in advance to arrange a visit.
Although this website is not an exhaustive list of all museums and galleries in Essex, Southend and Thurrock, we hope it will provide a handy guide for you to explore and enjoy Essex.
We have also published a guide to Essex museums which can be downloaded here.
This website is run by Museums In Essex Committee (MIEC) who were established in 1986. Since then the committee has provided support with projects, training and activities. MIEC also promotes Essex Museums across the region and nationally. Our mission is to “support museums in Essex to raise standards, and make their collections accessible to everyone”.
If you are an Essex Museum and would like to find out how MIEC can help you, please contact us using the form on our contact page
