Welcome to Museums In Essex

Image

This site contains the details of museums and galleries throughout Essex – from the Thames Estuary to Constable Country; Harlow to Walton-on-the-Naze. The 42 museums and galleries that feature in this guide cater for all tastes; so whether you are interested in history, science, art, the environment or are just simply curious, then there is a museum in Essex for you!

Essex has a long and rich history and its museums are an ideal way to discover this. From the earliest tantalising clues about life in pre-historic times to the exciting technological and scientific discoveries of the twentieth century and the thousands of years between, can be explored in museums and galleries throughout the county.

This site will also give you an idea of the facilities that each museum has to offer, as well as the type of access available to the public. Museums and galleries will welcome school and group visits, but if you want to bring a group you should always book well in advance.

Although this website is not an exhaustive list of all museums and galleries in Essex, Southend and Thurrock, we hope it will provide a handy guide for you to explore and enjoy Essex.

Have fun!

This site also contains information about News & information for people working or volunteering in museums in Essex and information about the Museums In Essex Committee (MIEC).

Essex has a network of over 80 museums. They vary from small volunteer run community museums to those with collections of national and international importance. MIEC co-ordinates countywide initiatives and projects for Essex museums. We provide advice and training and produce quarterly newsletters promoting museums across the county. We have also published a real Essex guide to 42 essex museums which can be downloaded here.

Essex Marvellous Museum Awards (EMMAs)

The Museums in Essex Committee has just launched the first ‘Essex Marvellous Museum Awards’.  The awards are designed to celebrate excellence in Essex museums.

Museums across Essex have been given voting cards to give to their visitors allowing them to register their votes.  An online voting card is available here http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=5yaXqOraxwPO22ZThO2Mbw_3d_3d

•    There are 3 public awards, Best Event, Best Exhibition and Museum of the Year  – Visitors to museums can vote for their favourite museum in one, two or all three categories
•    Visitors don’t have to vote for the same museum in each category – if they are planning to visit several museums over the summer they can take their card with them, filling it in along the way
•    All museums in Essex are eligible – no matter what size or type of museum

Other categories in the awards include

Best special project – this can include a build project, refurbishment, restoration, conservation etc – museums must nominate themselves and the winner is decided by the judging panel.

Outstanding Individual – This award will recognise the work and commitment of individuals in museums and their contribution to the museum and/or the wider museum community.  The nominations must be made by museum management and can be for paid staff or volunteers.  The winner will be decided by the judging panel.

Voting begins now and closes on 11th September.  A gala awards evening is arranged for the evening of 15th October 2009 at Barleylands Craft Village and Farm Centre.
